Endodontist/Specialists
An endodontist is dental specialist that has completed 4 years of Dental School along with an additional 2 or more years of specialty training in endodontics (root canals). In other words, an endodontist is a root canal specialist.bEndodontics is a dental specialty recognized by American Dental Association, which deals with tooth pulp and the tissues surrounding the root of the tooth.
With the lengthy education that an Endodontist receives, they are able to perform all aspects of root canal therapy including; routine as well as complex Root canals, Retreatments and Endodontic surgery, cracked teeth, and treating dental trauma. Root Canal Treatment is one of the most common procedures done today..
A Endodontist will generally examine a patient’s damaged tooth to determine if the pulp might be infected or inflamed. Depending on the complexity of the issues involved the patients receive Endodontic treatment. Molars, are an example, of more difficult teeth to treat than the front teeth.
In the case of a root canal procedure needed, the Endodontist will remove the inflamed or infected pulp tissue inside the tooth, shaping and cleaning the channel inside the root of the tooth. Unfortunately not all tooth pulp infections may be accompanied by obvious pain, that is a reason an Endodontist is needed for further treatment. Because infections or inflammations of exposed tooth pulp may happen at any time, immediate treatment usually is needed and best determined by the Endodontist Specialist.
Some Endodontists may also perform other services besides root canals such as the implantation of artificial teeth following extraction, however they typically focus on root canals and the treatment there off. Following Endodontic care, most teeth will need a crown to help strengthen the tooth.
Today, modern endodontics relies upon microscopic removal of diseased tissue, shaping of the internal anatomy of the tooth and placement of inert sealants into the root canal...Because of new advances in endodontics, most patients can retain teeth that would otherwise need to be removed.
A second area of endodontics is Surgical Endodontics, allows for treatment of the infected tooth when the standard approach is not possible. Endodontic surgery is an in-office procedure. It can be used to locate fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on x-rays but still manifest pain in the tooth. Damaged root surfaces or the surrounding bone may also be treated with this procedure. The most common surgery used to save damaged teeth is an apicoectomy or root-end resection.
